The story associated with holika dehen:

Once there was a king named hiranyakashipu, who was the great devotee of asuras and was against the worship of any other god. He declared himself as the god and in his empire, no one was supposed to praise any other god rather than him, but the biggest tragedy for him was his son Prahlad. Prahlad was the biggest devote of god Vishnu and hiranyakashipu tried a lot to make him understand that he cannot follow Vishnu but Prahlad all the time chanted the name and mantra of lord Vishnu. After trying all the ways he thought of the way to get rid of this problem, he started to make plans to kill Prahlad but in every attempt he was unable to kill him because lord Vishnu saved Prahlad every time and in the last he asked his sister holika to help him kill Prahlad.

Holika was blessed with a vardana  and got a cloth that if she sits in fire wearing that she will not get burned, so she kept Prahlad in her lap and sat in the kund of fire, but at that time also Prahlad was chanting the name of lord Vishnu , and hence Prahlad was saved and holika got burned in the fire, this depicted the victory of good over evil and hence, in order to celebrate this every year holika dehen is done. After the death of holika god Vishnu took avatara of narsimha and killed hiranyakashipu.

The story associated with holi(dhulandi):

The next day after the holika dehen is the dhulandi on this day people come in the streets and play with colors and water, this festival is associated with lord Krishna. As Krishna was jealous of the color of Radha so he planned to visit barsana – village of Radha with his friend and color Radha in the colors he liked, and hence in this order the festival of colors is celebrated the day next to holika dehen, another kind of holi celebrated his lathmar holi this is also associated with same incidence when Krishna throw Colors on Radha then women's of barsana beat Krishna and his friends with lathis.
